The Vineyards
The long journey to fine wine starts in the vineyard...
By clicking on the map to the right, you can get an overview of the vineyards which we contract to, in and around the west county triangle and their juxtaposition to the Sonoma Coast which makes for a cool climate and therefore long growing conditions.
All the Chardonnay vineyards, save one, a Dijon block from the Twin Hill Ranch, were planted to various ‘Wente’ selections. These are the descendants with slight genetic differences of the original plantings in California. The characteristics of these Chardonnay’s are small bunches and shot berries making for a concentrated wine. There are only two vineyards that are not near the west county triangle. These were too good to pass up. The Durell 'Sand Hill' Ranch and Green Acres Hill from the Sangiacomo's. Located in the eastern part of the Sonoma Coast appellation, these outstanding Chardonnay vineyards get their marine influence from the San Pablo Bay to the south. Two Chardonnays from west county that are vineyard designates are the Lorenzo Vineyard in the Russian River Valley and a new block planted to the Robert Young selection of Wente on the Twin Hill Ranch in Sebastopol which will see it's first release later this year. We also work with a Dijon 95 clone from the Twin Hill Ranch which is currently going into our Sonoma Coast appellation designate. Our Russian River Valley designate is made up of two vineyards; the Rued Ranch and Mill Station, both of which are farmed by the Dutton Family.
All our Pinot vineyard efforts are concentrated in Sonoma's ‘West County’. Original home of the Gravenstein apple, many of these old orchards are currently being replanted to grapes. We feel this cool area/soils/clones combination is ideal to produce Pinots with concentration yet maintain elegant varietal character. Most of these vineyards are being planted to Burgundys Dijon clones. Currently we are working with new plantings in southwest Sebastopol from the Twin Hill Ranch. Further northwest we have started working with the Cornerstone vineyard and the Joyce vineyard both of which sit on a ridge above Freestone. Soon there will be a vineyard designated Pinot Noir from the Freestone Station vineyard just off of Bohemian Highway in Freestone, which is farmed by the Duttons. For the ’04 harvest, we have begun working with a new vineyard located on Morelli Lane, which sits on a ridge overlooking Occidental. Currently we are producing a vineyard designated Pinot Noir (Dijon 115) from Sylvia’s vineyard which is west of the town of Graton in the Russian River Valley and owned and farmed by the Duttons.
We have worked very hard to obtain these world class vineyards. Luck often follows hard work and we are certainly lucky to work with these dedicated farmers. Each vineyard was selected for the specific relationship between the clone and the microclimate.
Please feel free to peruse the vineyards and see what makes them special - we have organized them in a list to the left by varietal, or if you would prefer you can click on the map to browse these vineyards geographically.
